Africans observing, monitoring U.S.

Image
https://lenchmob.lnk.to/mandown!share Political analysts and observers in Africa are monitoring the 2024 U.S. presidential election and understand regardless of the outcome, many of America’s foreign policies are viewed with trepidation. “While most Africans on the continent lean towards Democrats, they are very well aware that American policy is driven more by corporate financial interest and lobbying groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) than by elected leaders, Redge Nkosi, told Africa Watch via email. Nkosi, an economist and Pretoria-based founder and executive director of First Source Money and Public Banking of South Africa, was responding to questions about the election pitting Vice-President Kamala Harris, a Democrat against former president Donald Trump.  “… they (Africans) hold suspicious views about manifestos, speeches and promises made by candidates,” Nkosi noted.  Advertisement Nkosi, who was a member of the Nelson Mandela admini...

Israel’s flag carrier El Al operated and funded rescue flights for Israelis escaping this weekend’s violent attack in Amsterdam at a cost of several million shekels to the company, it said. While Israeli officials asked El Al to operate the rescue flights, the airline fully funded and operated them, according to El Al. The need for rescue flights followed violent attacks against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans after a soccer match between Maccabi and Ajax on Thursday evening.  Footage of the attack showed Israelis being beaten and chased in the streets. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported on Friday that the violent attacks against Israelis were a result of a planned attack against Jews organized in a Telegram group. Cap on Drug Costs

As Republican former U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to "terminate" a 2022 law that cut prescription costs for seniors, his Democratic opponent in next week's election, Vice President Kamala Harris, is pushing for an expansion of the policy that could save Americans billions of dollars, according to research released Friday. Two years ago, President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), capping annual out-of-pocket costs for patients with Medicare Part D; it's currently around $3,500 but set to drop to $2,000 next year. The Biden White House's budget for fiscal year 2025 and the Harris campaign have both advocated for extending that cap to people with private health insurance. The government watchdog group Public Citizen found that if implemented in 2022, "a $2,000 annual cap would have reached more than 900,000 patients with private insurance, saving them a total of $2.78 billion, equating to over $3,000 in savings per patient."
